삼성전자, 고성능 250 GB SSD 업계 최초 양산 돌입(Samsung Now Producing 256GB Solid State Drive)

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has begun mass producing 256 gigabyte (GB) solid state drives for use in notebooks and desktop PCs.

The new 256GB SSD more than doubles the performance rates of Samsung 64GB and 128GB SSDs to become the SSD with the highest overall performance in the personal computer industry, combining sequential read rates of 220MB/s (megabytes per second) with sequential write rates of 200MB/s.


The Samsung 256GB SSD expedites data transfer when large multimedia files are simultaneously read and stored. It can store 25 high-definition movies in just 21 minutes, a significant advancement over a 7200rpm HDD, which takes about 70 minutes. Furthermore, the 256GB SSD launches applications ten times faster than the fastest 7200rpm notebook HDD.

The 256GB SSD's advanced performance can be attributed to a new, optimized, single platform design consisting of a chip controller, NAND flash and special drive firmware all developed by Samsung. This single platform is designed to easily adapt to Samsung's 40nm class NAND flash memory.

Similar in weight to a 128GB SSD (81 grams), the 2.5-inch Samsung 256GB SSD retains the standard 9.5 millimeter (mm) drive thickness.

Samsung's 256GB SSD is also available with optional proprietary encryption programming that provides full disk encryption, a key feature for many corporate users.

삼성전자는 지난 7월 128GB SSD 양산에 이어 불과 4개월 만에 두 배 용량인 256GB 제품을 내놓음으로써 업계에서 가장 다양한 용량의 제품 라인업 (256/128/64/32/16/8GB)을 갖추게 됐다.

256GB는 노트PC 뿐만 아니라 현재 데스크탑 PC에 탑재되고 있는 HDD의 용량과도 대등한 수준이어서, 이번 양산을 통해 SSD 시장의 본격적인 확대가 더욱 가속화될 것으로 기대된다.

이번에 양산을 개시하는 256GB SSD는 삼성전자가 자체 개발한 컨트롤러 기술을 통해 고성능을 구현한 점이 가장 큰 특징으로, 특히 쓰기 속도가 업계 최고 수준인 200MB/s로 높아졌다. 이는 현재 양산 중인 SATAⅡ(3Gbps) SSD 제품군 70MB/s 대비 약 3배나 향상된 속도이다.

또한 쓰기 속도가 향상됨에 따라 읽기 속도 220MB/s와의 차이가 10% 이내로 축소됨으로써, 그 동안 쓰기 동작에서 읽기 동작 대비 20% 정도 속도가 저하되었던 문제를 근본적으로 제거하고 高부하 환경에서 안정적인 고속 동작이 가능해졌다.

삼성전자는 금번 컨트롤러 기술을 '09年 출시 예정인 '512 기가바이트(GB) SSD'는 물론 서버 SSD 및 저용량 SSD 제품군까지 확대 적용하여 EDP向 시장 주도를 위한 제품 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있게 됐다.

삼성전자 256GB SSD는 두께 9.5㎜, 무게 81g으로 2.5인치 128기가바이트(GB) SSD와 동급 수준이다.

삼성전자는 '08년 PC 시장에서 이미 64기가바이트(GB) 이상의 大용량 SSD 시장 점유율을 80% 이상 확보하고 있으며, 특히 하반기 이후 저가 노트북 및 서버 시장에서도 차별화된 SSD 제품을 출시하여 신시장 창출과 SSD 채용 확대를 추진해 나갈 방침이다.
